Water leak detection — Mornington Peninsula

Hidden water leaks found fast — without tearing up your property

Professional acoustic, thermal imaging and tracer gas detection to pinpoint the exact source of water leaks in slabs, underground pipes, walls and irrigation systems.

The problem with hidden leaks

A slow leak can cost thousands before you even notice it

Hidden water leaks waste thousands of litres, push water bills up significantly, and cause serious structural and property damage if left undetected. The challenge is that most leaks aren't visible — they're buried under concrete slabs, running through walls, or deep underground in your water main.

At Peninsula Leak 'n' Locate, we use specialist non-destructive detection technology to locate the exact source of a leak before any repair work begins. That means your plumber can go straight to the problem — no guesswork, no unnecessary excavation.

💧

Got a letter from South East Water about high usage?

An unexpected water usage notification is one of the most common triggers for leak detection on the Peninsula. If your meter is moving when everything is turned off, you almost certainly have a hidden leak. Call us before your next bill arrives.

How we find it

Our water leak detection process

We use multiple detection methods depending on the situation — no single tool finds every leak, so we combine techniques to confirm the location accurately before marking it out for repair.

1

Initial assessment

We discuss your symptoms, check your water meter, and assess any visible evidence of water loss to understand what we're looking for and where.

2

Acoustic detection

Specialist acoustic listening equipment picks up the sound signature of water escaping from a pipe — even under thick concrete slabs or deep underground.

3

Thermal imaging (where applicable)

Thermal cameras reveal temperature differences caused by leaking water under floors or behind walls — particularly effective for slab leaks in heated systems.

4

Tracer gas testing

For difficult-to-find leaks, we introduce a safe tracer gas into the pipe. The gas escapes at the leak point and is detected at surface level with a sensitive probe.

5

Mark out & report

We mark the exact leak location on the surface and provide a clear written report for your plumber, insurer or property manager.

Where we find leaks

Residential and commercial leak detection

🏠

Slab leaks

Water pipes running under concrete slabs are one of the most common — and most expensive — types of leak. We locate the exact breach point so your plumber can make a targeted repair rather than lifting the whole floor.

🌿

Underground water mains

Leaks in buried water supply lines from the meter to the house are common in older properties. We trace the pipe and pinpoint the leak before any ground is broken.

🚿

In-wall leaks

Leaks inside wall cavities show up as damp patches, mould or peeling paint. Thermal imaging and acoustic detection let us find them without opening up walls unnecessarily.

🌱

Irrigation systems

Leaking irrigation lines waste large volumes of water quietly. We detect breaks in underground irrigation systems across residential gardens, farms and sports grounds.

ℹ️

We detect — your plumber repairs

We're a specialist detection service, not a plumbing contractor. Once we've located and marked the leak, you engage your plumber to make the repair — with a precise target rather than a guess. Many plumbers across the Peninsula refer their customers directly to us for this reason.

Common questions

Water leak detection FAQs

How do I know if I have a slab leak?

Common signs include warm or wet spots on the floor, unexplained rises in your water bill, the sound of running water when everything is turned off, or cracks forming in your concrete slab or floor tiles. Your water meter can confirm it — turn everything off and watch if the dial still moves.

How accurate is leak detection?

Using acoustic and tracer gas methods together, we can typically locate a leak to within 20–30cm. This is precise enough for your plumber to make a targeted repair with minimal disruption.

Do I need to be home?

Yes — we need access to your water meter and the internal areas where the leak is suspected. The process typically takes 1–2 hours depending on the complexity.

Will you repair the leak?

We're a specialist detection service. Once we've found and marked the leak, you'll need a licensed plumber to carry out the repair. We're happy to recommend local plumbers we work with regularly.
